What Causes Dental Cavities In Children
Cavities are often caused by diets high in sugary foods, junk food, or a lack of brushing. By limiting your sugar intake and brushing regularly, you can help reduce the likelihood of developing cavities. The longer it takes for your child to chew their food, the longer the residue will stay on their teeth, which increases their chance of developing cavities.
Each time you eat, an acid reaction occurs inside of their mouth as the bacteria digests the sugar. The reaction can last for around 20 minutes. While this is happening, the acid environment can ruin your tooth’s structure and cause cavities.
The consistency of your saliva can also have an effect, because thinner saliva breaks up and washes food away quicker. When your diet is high in carbohydrates and sugar, your saliva tends to be thicker, which produces more of the bacteria that causes cavities.
