Icon

Icon, also known as Icon Resin infiltration, is an innovative and painless way to erase lesions without the need for a highly invasive dental procedure. It is a restorative treatment for post-ortho white-spot lesions (WSLs) and certain congenital hypocalcified enamel lesions (“hypo” spots). For its original purpose, Icon is a great help in early treatment of E1-D1 carious lesions, especially in posterior areas. This treatment is ideal for children and teens of all ages who currently have white spots on their teeth.

White spots or WSLs occur due to an imbalance of mineralization and remineralization on the teeth. In the past, you either had to live with the white spots or invest in extensive treatment to make them disappear. Fortunately, you can now unaesthetic white spots are not an issue with Icon. It makes the lesion look just like sound enamel by changing the refraction index of the white spot.

How Does It Work?

In a nutshell, the procedure involves the use of an HCl etchant to erode the surface of the lesion for the purpose of exposing the lesion porosities. The lesions are areas where minerals can’t access deeper portions of the enamel; they look white because of the way light scatters when it hits the lesions.

Now, Icon corrects the discoloration by infiltrating the enamel and filling in lesions with a tooth-colored resin. The process generally goes something like this:

  • The tooth is easily and gently separated with a wedge, making room in the interproximal area for the Icon applicator.
  • Then, the etching material is applied to the tooth multiple times. These steps will ensure that the resin, which is responsible for the color correction, is able to properly soak into the tooth. The etching process takes 120 seconds, then the gel is thoroughly washed.
  • Once the gel is completely rinsed, the area needs to be dehydrated with the use of ethanol. It is applied for 30 seconds and allowed to dry.
  • Then, the dentist removes the extra resin, then uses a light to harden the portion of it that remains in the teeth with cotton rolls, micro-brushes & floss.
  • After that, the teeth are polished to complete the new look. Once done, your teeth should have a significantly more uniform appearance than they did before.

Key Benefits

Being a less invasive and less expensive dental treatment, Icon offers a number of benefits, including:

  • It is suitable for children. Children are not candidates for other treatments that address white spots, such as porcelain veneers.
  • It saves as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
  • The results are long-lasting. You can expect to go a few years before you need to have an Icon touch-up.
  • Untreated hypo spots often look worse after bleaching. Hypo spots treated with Icon will whiten similarly to the natural tooth enamel.

Here at SuperKids Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we can not guarantee the spot will disappear completely, but in most cases it provides a significant cosmetic improvement in one simple, painless visit. Remember, the Icon procedure is only an option for those within the earliest stages of tooth decay.
