Healthy Dental Habits For Kids

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in every 5 children, 1 has at least one untreated form of tooth decay. That is 20% of the children’s population; making tooth decay the number one chronic disease affecting children in the US. As parents, we always consider our children’s health and wellness as our number one priority. As much as possible, we would like to save them from all the negative experiences that we’ve had before such as waking up in the middle of the night with a toothache and the fear of visiting a dental clinic.

The best preventative method to help our children combat cavities and other dental problems is to teach them healthy dental habits. Some of these healthy dental habits are as follows:

  • Brush and floss regularly

Even before the teeth start showing, you can help them maintain a healthy oral hygiene by wiping their gums with a soft cloth twice a day. Then when their teeth have come in, teach them to brush their teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled pediatric toothbrush. Once you notice that there are already teeth that are touching each other, you can then start teaching them to floss. Make sure to supervise your children when brushing and flossing to make sure that they are doing it correctly.

  • Stay away from sugary and acidic foods

Who doesn’t love sweets? Unfortunately, this is a big No-No for children’s teeth too. Every parent knows how bad sugary, sweet, and acidic foods are for their children’s teeth. Bacteria in the mouth thrive in an acidic and sugary environment. Apart from that, they are also difficult to wash away by our saliva; thus, making it enough of a factor for the bacteria’s population to increase rapidly. When your kids consume these types of foods, make sure to have them rinse their mouths afterward or brush their teeth.

  • Eat fruits and vegetables

While most children love sweets and junk food, only a few are fond of eating fruits and vegetables. This is the primary reason many children are diagnosed with obesity, which is as prevalent as tooth decay. If you want to save your child from obesity and cavities, teach them to eat fruits and vegetables while still young. Pears, melons, apples, cucumbers, and others also serve as natural “teeth cleaners” as they help scrape away food particles that get stuck in between the teeth.

  • Take a good amount of calcium

About 99% of all the calcium in our body is found in our bones and teeth. Calcium is known to help make the bones and teeth stronger. Teach your children to get their daily doses of calcium for stronger and healthier teeth. Foods like yogurt, cheese, broccoli, and milk are good sources of calcium.

  • Visit the pediatric dentist

Build the habit of regularly visiting their pediatric dentist while your children are still young. Your child can start visiting his or her dentist on their first birthday or as soon as their first tooth appears. Your child may get apprehensive on their first dental visit, but this is normal, and they will get more comfortable over time.
