What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign, also known as clear aligners, is a type of orthodontic treatment that can be used to achieve a more beautiful smile. Patients who have mild to moderate misalignment can also align the bite with an Invisalign. It is computer-generated from a mold (or impression) of the patient’s teeth—taken by either a dentist or an orthodontist—and the fitting is unique to each patient only.

Each patient is unique since not all gum lines are not the same. We all have different gum line structures, which is why Invisalign is custom-made to meet each patient’s needs. Dentists can take a fast and precise 3D digital scan of your teethˠ̐͊̽͌̚ and map out a custom treatment plan just for you. Once done, a succession of progressively different clear trays that gently move the teeth less than a millimeter will be received by the patient. After that, tray guides will be provided, and each tray is worn one to two weeks before moving onto the next tray. The trays are designed for convenience, which makes them easy to remove and put on.

The most common dental problems that Invisalign is used for are gapped teeth, mild bite problems, and crowded teeth. With this orthodontic treatment, the teeth move more gradually than traditional braces, leading to less discomfort. With Invisalign, most patients can see results or significant improvement within six months.

Invisalign For Kids

In 2018, Invisalign released an orthodontic product geared to patients ages 7-10 years old called Invisalign First or Invisalign First Phase. With this, kids can receive this orthodontic treatment since they are more compliant than older children and adults wearing these clear aligners.

Invisalign First is specifically designed to treat simple to complex teeth straightening issues in growing children, such as crowding, spacing, and narrow dental arches. This treatment is just as safe and as effective for children as adults as long as the child’s teeth have developed to an appropriate stage.

When it comes to children, it’s important to consider their unique gum line, traits, as well as their specific needs. Here at  SuperKids Pediatric Dentistry, we’ll happily go over all the requirements with you and your child at the initial consultation so you can make the best possible decision for your family. Our Invisalign services for kids are available at all four locations: Alexandria & Sterling, VA, and Potomac & Rockville, MD.
